Terrance Taylor

I’m a proud product of Muskegon, Michigan, and throughout my life, I’ve achieved many milestones that I hold dear. From high school through my professional career, these accomplishments have shaped who I am and how I strive to lead our future leaders, encouraging them to become winners in the game of life. Historic in the deepest sense.

Muskegon High School was founded in 1872, which means it's now over 150 years old. Winning a state title in wrestling during my dominant 2004 senior year made me the first and only athlete in school history to achieve that distinction. I carved my name into a century-and-a-half legacy. Out of all the athletes who have walked those halls since the Class of 1875, I stand alone in that achievement. That makes my state wrestling title not just impressive, but historic in the deepest sense.

A few months earlier, I helped lead Muskegon High School to its first football state championship since 1989, serving as team captain and defensive anchor. After four years as a varsity starter and playing in 48 games, that victory ended a 15-year drought and reignited Muskegon’s legacy as one of Michigan’s powerhouse programs. Historic in the deepest sense.

This made me the only athlete in Muskegon High School history to win state championships in both football and wrestling in the same year, truly marking me as an outlier in the school’s 150+ year athletic legacy. No other Muskegon athlete has accomplished that dual feat. Such crossover dominance, particularly in two physically demanding sports, is exceedingly rare—not just at Muskegon, but anywhere. I didn’t just win titles; I redefined what was possible for a Muskegon athlete. Historic in the deepest sense.

I add two more State Titles in Power Lifting sophomore and Junior year as well as a Regional Champion in Discus. That’s four state titles across three sports in just two years with 2004 being my Triple Crown year. No other athlete in Muskegon High School history has matched that level of multi-sport dominance. I am the only athlete in school history to win state titles in football, wrestling, and powerlifting in the same year (2004).  I didn’t just win I set a standard that still hasn’t been touched. Historic in the deepest sense.

I received honors such as Male Athlete of the Year (2004), All-State Dream Team (2003 & 2004), Big Reds MVP (2004), State Class A Player of the Year (2004), EA Sports All-American (2004), and Defensive Lineman of the Year at the University of Michigan Football Camp (2003). With full-ride Division I scholarship offers for both football and wrestling, I chose to continue my football career at the University of Michigan. I became the first Muskegon High School football player in 50 years to do so, that’s a generational milestone. The last before me? Bennie Oosterbaan, who played at Michigan in the 1920s and later became a legendary coach there. My commitment thus broke a half-century drought for Muskegon athletes at one of the most storied programs in college football. Historic in the deepest sense.

In 2005, I was officially inducted into the Muskegon Sports Hall of Fame as a Scholar-Athlete, an honor that recognized not only my unmatched athletic accomplishments but also my commitment to academics and leadership. This accolade capped my high school career and secured my place in Muskegon’s history—not just as a champion, but as a role model. Historic in the deepest sense.

I joined the University of Michigan football program in 2005. As a true freshman, I traveled with the team and played immediately, earning early reps and laying the foundation for a powerful collegiate career. From 2006 to 2008, I was a three-year starter at defensive tackle, anchoring one of the most physical and respected defensive lines in the Big Ten. In my sophomore season (2006), I helped lead Michigan to the #1 run defense in the nation, allowing just 43.4 rushing yards per game during the regular season. That unit—featuring Alan Branch, LaMarr Woodley, David Harris, and myself—is still considered one of the greatest defensive groups in Michigan history. Historic in the deepest sense.

That same year, I played in the iconic “Game of the Century”—the 2006 Michigan vs. Ohio State matchup, where both teams entered undefeated and ranked #1 and #2 nationally. It was the first-ever 1 vs. 2 matchup in the rivalry’s history. The game was watched live by 21.04 million viewers across the United States and remains one of the most-watched regular season college football games of all time. It drew a record-breaking crowd of 105,708 fans at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. As one of the most anticipated games in college football history, I was proud to represent Michigan and Muskegon on that stage. Historic in the deepest sense.

In 2007, I recorded 55 total tackles, becoming the first Michigan defensive tackle since 1997 to post over 50 in a season. My performance earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors, and in 2008, I was named a team captain, reflecting my leadership and respect within the program. I finished my Michigan career with 113 tackles, 6 sacks, and a legacy built on toughness, consistency, and pride. Historic in the deepest sense.

At the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine, I delivered one of the most dominant performances in the strength test, winning the 225-pound bench press drill with 37 reps—the highest total among all defensive linemen that year. That showing confirmed what coaches and scouts already knew: I brought elite power, work ethic, and durability to the next level. My Combine performance helped solidify my draft stock, and I was selected in the 4th round by the Indianapolis Colts, launching my professional football journey. Historic in the deepest sense.

I’m ranked #25 on MLive’s definitive list of the greatest football players from the Muskegon area. According to the Local Sports Journal, I’m ranked #23 among the greatest high school football players in Michigan history. I also made the Top 100 High School Athletes of the 21st Century (So Far), a list compiled by MaxPreps that highlights multi-sport dominance, state titles, and national impact. I was recognized alongside legends like LeBron James, Patrick Mahomes, and Derrick Henry. These rankings reflect my four state titles across three sports, my historic barrier-breaking move to the University of Michigan, and my EA Sports All-American status—all before I even turned 19. Historic in the deepest sense.

After an 11-year professional football career spanning both the NFL and AFL, I have come full circle back to Muskegon, where it all began. I played at the highest levels, competed in stadiums across the country, and earned respect as a relentless competitor. Now, I am channeling that same energy into giving back, building programs, and empowering the next generation. Historic in the deepest sense.
